The Cayma district is privileged by nature and history. Located in the higher part of the city, lies about 3 kilometers from down town Arequipa (about 8 minutes by car). It is known as “Arequipa’s balcony”, because from its ideal location one has a great view of the city. Its central plaza-of colonial design- has five entry points, each one consisting of a very high arch with carved decorations. Four of these were built by Presbyter Juan Domingo de Zamácola y Jauregui.
The temple of Archangel Saint Michael, built in 1730, is located in the Plaza and is considered an architectural jewel. Its primary feature is its façade, which combines Spanish and local motives of Corinthian style with four columns, two on each side. In front are pilasters with their corresponding bases, cornices and toppings, over which there is a niche shaped as a sea shell, which serves as a window that provides light to the choir. On top of a stone stands the Virgen de la Candelaria. “Bolivar’s dining room” is located in the priest’s house. stories tell, the Liberator had lunch in it. |
