Paucarpata is located 7 Km from Arequipa
downtown.
On the southeast of this district there are large pre – Inca
terraces. Ancient Andes people on V century developed
characteristic agriculture and irrigation systems, creating terraces
because of the rugged range of mountains.
The terraces set special climates that allow to cultivate a variety
of vegetables through the terraces upon their resistant to low temperatures.
This kind of agricultural system resists the erosion thanks to
stone filled that was put under the land in each terrace.
There are big stones in the lower part and small stones in the upper
part. The function of these stones is to get the sun heat
during the day to keep same temperature during the night.
The pincipal vegetables cultivated are corn, potatoes, onions, barley
and alfalfa.
Because of the beauty of these terrases, Paucarpata terraces were
declared “Peruvian Cultural Heritage”
