Carmen Alto is a traditional place located in Cayma
town. It is at the side of Chili river, 4 Kms away from the
Arequipa Main Square. Its streets are quiet and pleasant and the
people is friendly. It
hasbeautiful well conserved terraces narrowed by stones. These
terraces are used for cultivation, and there were built since Pre
Inca times by the “Yarabayas”. Also, there are ancient
pathways that are still in use nowadays. In Carmen
Alto begins the irrigation ditch that irrigates some of Cayma and
Yanahuara agricultural fields. Down the way there are springs
that increase the river volume.
Also, a beautiful landscape of the three volcanoes Chachani, Misti
and Pichupichu are seem from “La Rinconada” pointview.
Next to this pointview we can find llamas and alpacas. Also there
is a stand where we can buy traditional “coca leaf”
and a Peruvian tuber called “maca”.
The weather in Carmen Alto place is perfect for typical plants nursery
like “tumbo” and “papaya arequipeña”.
